“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”(Mark 3:25) This is a statement that has rung true throughout the ages. Lincoln used it 3 years before the beginning of the Civil War, and wasn’t he dead on the mark? Today, America is a house divided against itself, and the truth of the maxim, “a house divided against itself cannot stand,” again faces the test of validity.
Can a country succeed when 50% of the population is perpetually opposed to the other half? Will such a country have the will, strength, and determination to address a monumental crisis and arrive at a decision that puts universal survival before partisan position? Or will America prove that greed and personal aggrandizement are more potent and characteristic of humankind than fraternity?
American democracy, in its present two party form, each party intent on denying the opposition even a chance to implement change, is conditioning the country for catastrophe. When the crisis occurs, those at the top will make a desperate attempt to consolidate their position through the rapid appropriation of what little is left. But the masses, ripe for revenge, and thus susceptible to outrage and exploitation, will have none of it. The result will make the bloodletting of the Civil War pale in comparison.
