First, a question: Is it wise to have greedy people inside the Military Industrial Complex?
Many Republicans say that taxes on companies removes incentives for them to continue to do business. For this discussion lets assume that is a valid argument.
Under that assumption, allowing military contractors to reap huge profits in war time means we WANT them to keep making war tools, which no peaceful person could want. THERE SHOULD NOT BE HUGE PROFITS FOR TOOLS OF WAR. We need our military, and I will always support the troops, but we don't need the bloat.
I propose we tax the hell out of the profits (not revenues, profits) for any companies selling weapons or services to the US government. The TEA party should agree with this as well - war tools are hugely expensive, especially so when people make large profits.
I say tax over 80% of the profits from military contractors. Tax profits instead of revenue because we are still a capitalist country and companies need profits to survive long term. By allowing them to profit we are giving them confidence to continue to do business, but we are removing the incentive for greedy people to be inside the Military Industrial Complex.
Tax everyone at 100%. Then we can redistribute it as we see fit, with OWS members, of course, being more equal than others.
That is not a realistic demand. You are asking to turn America into a socialist country... And if you didn't notice we can't even socialize health care without a sh*t storm.
America already is a socialist country in everything but name. Everything is subsidized, everything is controlled and there are no real private property rights. You can lose your house to eminent domain because the city wants to put up a Wal Mart. Trust me, it happens. So can we please stop pretending?
I agree we are already socialist, but our founding fathers created checks and balances in the government to stop major changes that one side wants that the other does not. Occupy Wall Street is a very leftist movement, and if they want fast changes they will need to appeal to a large demographic, not just the left.
We need to set bold but realistic goals given the polarized state of our country.
