Forum Post: a campaign reform amendment

Given the betrayal of the supreme court towards the American people when they decided that unlimited campaign donations were constitutional we have no other choice than to pass an amendment to stop it.

It is possible and it has to be carried out. We have no alternative.

The Supreme Court did nothing of the sort. Individual donations to federal candidates are limited to $5,000 combined for primaries and general elections. Corporate donations to federal campaigns are illegal. Before calling for a constitutional amendment, perhaps you should read the Supreme Court's decisions--or at least a short article about them.

Apparently you haven't heard about super-pacs.

I've heard a lot about them; they are forbidden by law from coordinating with political candidates' campaigns. What's wrong with people pooling their money together to get a message out? Isn't that what OWS does when it pools money to buy a megaphone or other equipment? Forbidding people from pooling their resources to get their message out would make free speech a hollow shell.

Well the fact of the matter is that corporations have donated ALOT of money for political campaigns. The 2012 election is expected to raise 1 billion dollars in campaign contributions and I can assure you the vast majority will not come from people. I don't know whether corporations are using super-pacs or what have you, the fact is that they're doing it. Courtesy of the institution that's supposed to protect our constitutional rights.

Goal of occupy should be to change washington . The only way to do that is two constitutional amendments. 1.ALL OFFICE HOLDERS ARE LIMITED TO ONE , FOUR YEAR TERM including current office holders. No campaign for reelection , no campaign contributions. 2. ALL officeholders cannot accept anything with a value above $100 , from any person , corporation, group or lobbyist during their term.
