This week Max&Stacy look at the victims of banking fraud...

the Alabama poor cut off from water supplies, (12:40 into the video)

(Why am I not surprised to see JPMORGANs name pop up in this Alabama water story?)

...And the small ranchers who lost it all when MF Global was run into the ground by former Goldman Sachs banker and ex-New Jersey governor, Jon Corzine.

This problem in Alabama is what happens when you trust the government to get things done. I hope the Six Jefferson County commissioners that were found guilty of corruption for accepting the bribes, along with 15 other officials went to jail.

They need to send in Donald Trump. This same thing happened in NY in the early 1990s. The was hundreds of millions over budget and 3 years overdue and he the Donald came in and got it done in a few months for a few hundred thousand.

As for the guy in Texas, he lives in the dessert and says he "likes to keep his lawn green" and is upset about the bill. People living in the desert need learn how to conserve water.

[-] 1 points by bill1102inf2 (357) 12 years ago

its already 'done', the problem now is that water/sewer costs are 500%+++ higher than what they were suppose to be. The system needs to be taken over, total losses taken by the bond holders, people jailed and the system operated without owing any $$ thus reducing the price people need to pay down to (cost to run / people using the system) this would result in $20 a month or less.

[-] 1 points by JoeTheFarmer (2654) 12 years ago

Sounds reasonable to me. The government officials the were found guilty and those that paid the bribes should foot the bill if you ask me.

[-] 1 points by bill1102inf2 (357) 12 years ago

as far as I am concerned anyone who bought an 'investment' risks losing their 'investment', when their is corruption and fraud, they deserve to lose it all (which is impossible at this point because of the payments already made), but they should lose the rest. this is another example of hurting the innocent in order to enrich the greedy

[-] 1 points by JoeTheFarmer (2654) 12 years ago

I am not eager to I agree with you that the "investors" deserve to lose their money. Often the investors are ordinary people who bought municipal bonds with the idea that they are a more secure investment that stock in wall street. Most often these are folks near retirement age looking for a stable investment. They are not aware of what the municipalities do with the money.

[-] 1 points by bill1102inf2 (357) 12 years ago

thats fine with me as long as the fraudsters (Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, etc) end up footing the bill. Bonds have a LOW risk of default, historically but that CAN and SHOULD change when fraud and corruption are added to the equation, should it not?

Pretty much when you look at public utilities, you are looking at functional monopolies, because communities often times do not have choices in providers, and often times choices are a matter of paper as the grid or infrastructure is the same. Kind of like looking at oil futures trading. It is a very big game. You basically are given no say or counter measures, you just have to live with it.

Or do you? Band together people of the USA, unite in demanding change.

[-] 1 points by bill1102inf2 (357) 12 years ago

The people need to get together and take back their water system. Its that simple folks.

There's a great book out there called Fiasco: The Inside Story of a Wall Street Trader http://www.amazon.com/Fiasco-Inside-Story-Street-Trader/dp/0140278796 It's the memoir of a bond trader in the 90's at Morgan Stanley. I read the book a few years ago. Sadly the fact that a bad bond deal with JP Morgan caused the shortfall came as no surprise to me.

[-] 1 points by MonetizingDiscontent (1257) 12 years ago

The real life consequences and personal tragedies as the result of banker fraudsters. Jefferson county Alabama has filed for bankruptcy, the largest in U.S. history. What happened was they set out to build a 300 million dollar sewage system, and low&behold who walked in, JP MORGAN! ...with some credit derivatives to sell them; interest rate swaps ...which turned that 300 million dollar sewage system into a 3.1 BILLION dollar sewage system.

So... would Glass Steagall have prevented any of these deals to begin with? Thats how I understand it. Not only did Glass Steagall divide/break-up the banks, it imposed position limits that investment banks could take

...but didn't it Also make trading derivatives Illegal too? (not sure)

I've heard good things about that book...Fiasco =) maybe Santa will bring it this year.

[-] 1 points by demcapitalist (977) 12 years ago

Some of the bond deals in fiasco would not have been prevented by Glass Steagall IMO because wall street redefined the term bond at some point. A bond had always been thought of as a boring investment, a simple loan to a company or a country or a municipality. They paid interest based on perceived risk. The bonds for sale by Morgan Stanley that I read about were these complex wall street products included swaps and other derivatives that might implode at any time. They were sold to pension funds, banks, countries etc. That book should have served as a warning about the CDO concoctions that would take down our economy. He's put a nice epilogue in about the latest stuff.

[-] 1 points by MonetizingDiscontent (1257) 12 years ago

ah...thanks for clearing that up for me. Banking must be made to be boring again

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

It should not be privatized.

People need to get this and do it quick.

[-] 3 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

I say all services that the public depends upon should be in public hands. Energy production, telecommunications, the more of the banking system, and in this case water and sewer.

but, you know

I'm cr4zY!

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

I agree. You can go back to over a hundred years ago and see a big package of fail of privatization of other services. The last 25 years have been several packages of fail and what the dumbasses don't get is that they will actually PAY more and get crappy service. I agree, bring it inhouse. People that want services privatized either lack education or they are seeking to rip people off.

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

There is a repelican running for mayor of Burlington who wants to sell Burlington Electric -

it's a one hundred year old asset belonging to the city.

They have the lowest electric rates in the state. and the highest population, but hey.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Have you written him? Oh, never mind--these people never let the facts get in the way.

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

The repelican mayoral hopeful?

You think I should write him?

I'd much rather stick a pen in his neck.

I don't live in Burlington anyway - but I doubt the Burlington voters will go for it.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

You know, when does this all become low-grade genocide?

Poison the land and the water, deny shelter and medical care and food. When do we call it low grade genocide? I understand that it isn't currently. I just keep running around in my head the cycle of sickness that is caused-denial of the problems-inability to get adequate care. Add in no shelter, no food, no water, no health care. :/

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

No, I started to have that thought and promptly corrected myself.

The older I get, the more I hate people.

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

Really? I think I'm way past that point -

and now all that's left is the older I get

the more I forget . . .

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

You mean like walking into a room and not knowing why you are there? Or opening a file cabinet and you do not remember why?

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

Yup - sorta. When I walk into a room and forget why it's usually because I'm tired and / or distracted.

Ah well.
