Forum Post: 50,000 March Against Austerity in London

Tens of thousands of people marched through central London on Saturday afternoon in protest at austerity measures introduced by the coalition government. The demonstrators gathered before the Houses of Parliament, where they were addressed by speakers, including comedians Russell Brand and Mark Steel.

An estimated 50,000 people marched from the BBC's New Broadcasting House in central London to Westminster.

"The people of this building [the House of Commons] generally speaking do not represent us, they represent their friends in big business. It's time for us to take back our power," said Brand.

"This will be a peaceful, effortless, joyful revolution and I'm very grateful to be involved in the People's Assembly."

"Power isn't there, it is here, within us," he added. "The revolution that's required isn't a revolution of radical ideas, but the implementation of ideas we already have."

Austerity for defense spending!

"High levels of military spending played a key role in the unfolding European sovereign debt crisis — and continue to undermine efforts to resolve it."

http://roarmag.org/2013/05/new-report-no-austerity-for-eu-military-spending/

I guess we gotta draw the line somewhere.

Ex-cellent info, I'll read through after my coffee

''Unions need more rights : Capitalism depends on it'' was how the following article was titled in my hard copy of 'The Guardian' on Tuesday, 8th July & if you are going to read anything after your coffee, I'd suggest starting with this because it is deeply insightful and references and dovetails with that excellent Owen Jones article (last link above) :

''A small elite, whether here (UK) or in the US, is now taking a larger share of our national incomes. More and more of the rest of us have been borrowing just to keep up our standard of living. And what's been the fruit of all this inequality and debt? The almighty meltdown of 2007-8. That causal link is hardly controversial. It is well put in a 2010 study from the IMF that concludes: "Without a recovery in the incomes of poor and middle income households, the inevitable result is that loans keep growing and therefore so does … the probability of a major crisis."

I agree that lifting poor/middle class out of indebtedness (by raising wages, absolving debt) benefits ALL.

The wealthy will do better when consumers have money to spend.

Money does not naturally "trickle down", rather instead flows upwards. When we fail to control that flow with regulation & tax policy the wealthy naturally suck it all up to their own detriment.

Like the scorpion (1%'r) stinging the turtle/frog (99%) while getting a lift across the lake.

They fucking scorpion will kill us all & himself without a care.

Part of the reason for the march is the fact that England has the largest wealth gap in the civilized world.

http://www.occupy.com/article/absurd-record-costs-london-commercial-real-estate-reflects-widened-wealth-gap

More billionaires per capita than the US.

[-] 3 points by 99nproud (2697) 10 years ago

And so ending austerity, tax/subsidy reform, investing in people, wage increases, and so many other issues must be addressed to put a dent in that inequity.

Many years of hard work in the streets, & at the ballot box.

Austerity is the enemy

[-] 1 points by MattHolck0 (3867) 10 years ago

i don't need no fine wine

austerity means living on as little as necessary

I won't respect the political rhetoric from the bank that says we owe them everything

their is no enemy, just us

[-] 1 points by 99nproud (2697) 10 years ago

Well, We can take us.

Exactly, the more legalese/fine print the more likely we're being screwed.

And - Who said no one profited from the Iraq invasion?

Yep - totally done for humanitarian reasons . . . wait a mo . . . sorry my bad - corp(se)oRATions are NOT people.

She mentioned other reasons to challenge the greenwashing cultural sponsorships of Big Oil – from Shell’s human rights abuses and destruction in the Niger Delta, to BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, to the giant oil contracts both companies were awarded after the invasion of Iraq. - See more at: http://www.occupy.com/article/vikings-invade-british-museum-activists-challenge-big-oil%E2%80%99s-propaganda-machine#sthash.uZKGUgVa.dpuf

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

Well if nothing else - then - I suppose it makes the Bloated Bastards in the USA feel a little less lonely?

[-] 3 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

Yep, and just like here, they are busy "profitizing" whatever commons are left.

[-] 3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

They keep increasing the pace that they push people into the pit and they may have a very nasty surprise headed their way - and not just like in Egypt or that part of the world - but in "western" societies as well.

[-] 3 points by trashyharry (3084) from Waterville, NY 10 years ago

They are doing it to themselves. They are parking themselves on the Railroad Tracks of History because their Greed is Out of Control for real..

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

One would think that besides their insane greed that world wide ( as in every land all at once ) bloody revolt is also an aim ummm insane goal of theirs.

I mean - if anyone can't see it coming - well - then they are truly blind or incredibly stupid.

Simple matter of cause and Effect.

There is now a thing where the Rich people have these ritzy gun ranges where they can go and practice with their firearms in luxurious surroundings. They also sometimes have bunkers with luxury accommodations for themselves.I'm guessing the accommodations in the bunkers for the bodyguards and servants are crowded and squalid.I really don't think it would take the bodyguards long to decide they would be better off to just kill their employers and move into the luxurious section of the bunker.

OH - Lord Bless us - could we dare hope for an escalation of Cheney shooting friend in face ( only perhaps more deadly ) type incidents? Perhaps a set off of a chain reaction? They could feel threatened by thoughts of their neighbors coming after their personal hoards.

TAKE NO PRISONERS . . . umm no honey put down the gun - I will be doing the shooting - you can go get me a cocktail . . . um.......honey???

[-] 3 points by trashyharry (3084) from Waterville, NY 10 years ago

You can't survive a Peasant Revolt by barricading yourself in a gated community or bunker with your Servants,Bodyguards, and personal Armory.Because you will eventually run out of ammo, get murked by the Servants or get smoked out & shot down. You could try a Supersecret Hideout or a Batcave type deal, but neither of those is a safe alternative, either.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago

Probably why they seem "dead" set on ending all life on the planet. They haven't parsed out that part where they die with everyone else - apparently.

Fresh anti austerity protests

You mock the protesters?

[-] 3 points by trashyharry (3084) from Waterville, NY 10 years ago

LOL-no.I only said that because I am living way out in the country with one other person who is hardly ever home.My main companions are a dog and 30 chickens. The really big protests are in the future, and I believe in the power of Street Protests.I have created dozens of small paintings and given them away at #OWS protests.I could do alot more to help with street protests.but I don't know any #OWS artists.I did spend about 400usd on tube socks,Ricola cough drops and food at the original #OWS protests.I am sure there will be many more.

[-] 1 points by 99nproud (2697) 10 years ago

Austerity? Like in this unanswered thread?

https://occupywallst.org/forum/austerity-broken-eggs-but-no-omelet/

Mostly our trolls want to stir up nothing but partisan shit, while they pretend they aren't partisan at all.

[-] 1 points by 99nproud (2697) 10 years ago

Our trolls are Scared, angry, inexperienced, & ignorant. Amateurs!

Better to keep them off the threads related to the critical issues (like protesting austerity) & keeping their partisan, & meaningless threads of distraction as low as possible.

As always, appreciate your contributions & anti troll efforts.

Europe doesn't exist, from the point of view of many on this forum.

That's very unfortunate.
