100 March on NYPD 1st Precinct to Demand Dignity;
Women in Custody Being Harassed, Police Protocols In Question

Posted 13 years ago on Nov. 16, 2011, 12:54 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

**Message from Protestors to NYPD: If you SEE something, a fellow officer violating protocol, SAY something**

Over 100 people, mostly women, marched from Liberty Square to NYPD’s 1st Precinct HQ at 11pm Tuesday night to demand that all women in custody be treated with respect and dignity by the police. The march was organized after our sisters in custody made various complaints of male officers patrolling the women’s cells, unannounced. We were told that male members of the NYPD were specifically making unannounced patrols by the women’s cells, and by the shared women’s toilet (in plain view of all women and officers)--which is a common tactic used to humiliate those in custody.

In the spirit of the Occupy movement, the crowd of 100 gathered in a show of solidarity to demand that the NYPD issue a formal statement that this will be addressed and that there be no more instances of this humiliating tactic being used. There were no arrests at tonight’s solidarity march.

Some chants from the crowd: “All day, all night, occupy women’s rights!” and “Courtesy, professionalism and respect” and “If you see something, say something!”

All those in solidarity are encouraged to call the complaint line and demand Police Commissioner Ray Kelly put an end to this violent behavior. NYPD Internal Affairs: 212.487.7350 or directly NYPD 1st Precinct: 212.334.0611

Linnea Palmer, Occupy Wall Street Press Team, is available for any follow up questions on this particular action. Press@occupywallst.org

Thank you OWS for the show of support for the women that had to experience this lack of work ethic and morals on the part of the NYPD that participated in this reprehensible behavior to try to demean and disgrace the women that were detained. Will be calling to file a complaint.

Everything that goes on between police and their captives should be on video. It is no longer very expensive and should be standard procedure across the country.

It´s wonderful to se all this engagement and activism: Fight back non violently. grow!, fight! The world desperatly needs change, and a growing active occupy movement is exactly what we need. Keep on growing, keep on fighting. Nothing can stop us now! "What you should do is exactly the kinds of things that are going to lead to hysteria among privileged and powerful people" - Noam Chomsky

This is chilling, especially given the last few months of revelations about the NYPD, whose officers have recently been acquitted, rather dubiously, on rape charges; caught committing rape in broad daylight; been suspects in the serial murders of prostitutes on Long Island; and of course, targeted defenseless and restrained young women for pepper spraying. The pattern of NYPD assaults on women needs to be at the start of any conversation of its tactics of policing.

[-] 0 points by lecorsaire (25) 13 years ago

I'm with you 100% on that issue. I was disgusted when those two cops were acquitted of rape earlier this year. However not all of them are like that. Most are just trying to do their job and especially yesterday tried to do it as non-violently as possible. Of course if you have people who are being belligerent and not willing to comply after being warned, you have to use some kind of force. That force happens to be batons and pepper spray.

[-] 1 points by FHampton (309) 13 years ago

Except that there seems to be systematic abuse of women by the NYPD, as well as rampant corruption (recall two weeks ago, the "ticket-fixing" investigation, which turned up drug-running, gun-running, coverups of assault. What was the NYPD response? To block up the court where the crooked cops were being arraigned, and in the process harassing people across the street who were collecting welfare checks) . There are multiple rape cases--not just the acquittal but also an NYPD cop who raped a school teacher at gunpoint in broad daylight on her way to work in August; the cop in Park Slope who told a woman not to wear skirts if she didn't want to be raped. And then this serial killer on Long Island who has been targeting women--it is thought that he is current or former NYPD. Now this deliberate humiliation of female OWS activists. It's a pattern of abuse and misogyny.

Also chilling in view of similar tactics routinely used by Egyptian police during and after the crackdown, such as forced "virginity tests". Have you no shame?

[-] 1 points by FHampton (309) 13 years ago

What's your point? That American-funded Egyptian police brutalized women in Cairo and so NYPD are therefore blameless? 2+2=5?

[-] 2 points by TeaRex (36) from Hannover, NDS 13 years ago

My point was that things like that are extra chilling because they're so similar to tactics used by despotism, like in Egypt. Quite the opposite of what you read in it. Sorry for not expressing myself clearly enough. "Have you no shame?" was aimed at those men who do such things.

Wierder still is the solidarity people felt with the NYPD when it wanted to complain about bombs going off inside the WTC buildings on 9/11 and had a gag order issued upon it. No doubt many who would have been talking have been replaced by those who wont.

[-] 1 points by socialmedic (178) 12 years ago

Right. Isn't it nice, Wall Street and the 9/11 memorial living side by side? It's an urban oxymoron. While your head is stuck in the sand your butt is highly exposed for kicking.

[-] 9 points by TrevorMnemonic (5827) 13 years ago

Real men don't hit a woman. I've seen NYPD and many other "police officers" who have abused women who were standing still and even sitting down peacefully in some cases. Standing still after 11pm in a park does not give an officer the right to brutalize women. They can arrest for trespassing and that's it. But hey that's what happens when you live in a police state.

[-] 0 points by TH3W01F (180) from Ottawa, ON 13 years ago

I hate to disagree with your statement. "Real men don't hit women", is a bit sexist to me. It implies that women are incapable of defending themselves as a gender.

How about "An adult individual, sound of mind and body does not abuse his strength or status over someone who may be unable to defend themselves".

This encompasses all people who would be unable to defend themselves. Be it man or woman, A young child or a elderly person, able bodied or disabled.

[-] 2 points by whataboutmensrights (5) 12 years ago

How about "An adult individual, sound of mind and body does not abuse his strength or status over someone who may be unable to defend themselves".

How about taking the "his strenght" part out and replacing it with their strength as to not rule out the abuses that are perpitrated by women???

[-] 1 points by natetongwong (-2) from East Orange, NJ 13 years ago

It's not sexist. "Real men don't hit women." Women will never reach the same physical capacity as men (few exceptions). Yes, women can probably defend themselves in other ways, but physically, not so much. In a physical confrontation between a man and woman, the man usually wins. That's why it is cowardly for the man to hit the woman. Don't take this as an attack against the feminist movement.

[-] 1 points by whataboutmensrights (5) 12 years ago

A woman with a baseball bat can do some damage, women who abse are Far more likely to involve some type of weapon, the fairy tale of women always being the victim in wrong by nearly every study not conducted by the feminists groups, by all reasonably scientific studies, it is estimated that women are the abusers in nearly if not more than half of all abuse cases.

[Removed]

[-] 0 points by TH3W01F (180) from Ottawa, ON 13 years ago

You fail to see the point of my argument. Why limit it to women? Why not encompass all genders that have members who cannot defend themselves?

[-] 0 points by natetongwong (-2) from East Orange, NJ 13 years ago

Already implied. But the reason why we say "Real men don't hit women" is because there are about just as many men as there are women in the world so this statement can be better generalized. I'm sure we also have a saying that says "Real men don't hit other men who are paralyzed waist down" but obviously we don't say that a whole lot because who don't run into paraplegic people a whole lot.

[-] -1 points by Thisisthetime (200) from Kahlotus, WA 13 years ago

I fully support Occupy Wall Street. However, it is important to distinguish The Sheriff from the deputies and the 1% from the 99%. If I need help I will call a policeperson, I won't call a CEO, a banker or a gangsta.

[-] 1 points by SwissMiss (2435) from Ann Arbor Charter Township, MI 13 years ago

The question is will that police officer (not all are men) help you.

[-] 7 points by LoveIsAll (24) 13 years ago

[-] 6 points by zygarch (83) 13 years ago

What a shame that NYPD won't accept that they are part of the 99%. It does make you wonder about the psychological makeup of someone who would choose to be a "policer" of others.

Perhaps we should sympathize with them in the fact that without their badge and uniform, they are actually utterly powerless in our society and culture what with the 1% running pretty much every other aspect of their lives: determining their salary, benefits, employment, security, home loans, "investments", their off-duty civil rights, and more...

Not to mention their (lack of) ability to have a voice in how our country operates, or to affect how the five media conglomerates represent them as well as what those conglomerates choose to inform them about the world, and the big one-- the reality that the 1% would just as soon break up their union as blink, effectually hanging them out to dry.

So, understanding all of this just might make it easier for us to see why they feel compelled to "follow orders"-- considering, they do so as a matter of survival.

[-] -3 points by natetongwong (-2) from East Orange, NJ 13 years ago

The men and women serving at the NYPD commit their lives to a goal more noble and sacrificial than you will ever understand. Do you honestly think that all cops enjoy living on less than 50k a year? They put their lives on the line by working in one of the toughest cities in the world, with little pay/pensions, and basically every eff-the-police punk scrutinizing their actions. It only takes one minor incident involving ONE or a FEW officers to shame the whole institution but other than that, who gives a crap about all the good stuff they do for us, right?

Or worse yet do you honestly think cops are so stupid that they are totally oblivious to the fact that they are some kind of puppet? Sure these people probably didn't have the luxury of receiving a college degree but I think these people know a little bit more about devoting their life to a just cause than you do.

Oh and they receive absolutely no gratitude nor recognition for anything they do. I bet that if you patrol the streets from 1am to 5am everyday, you'd demand credit for what you did, right? You try being a cop.

[-] 2 points by joeyadrian (2) 13 years ago

Try taking it easy on people who are standing up for you and your childrens future in this society where a top elite class can get away with the biggest financial swindle in the history of the world and many cops like you probably instead of understanding what this is all about and what it really means to you personally choose to pepper spray, baton and mace people excersicing their first amendment freedoms. You are okay with the crooks taking your childs future away and have no problem protecting people who could give a shit about you and your badge. I live in Greenwich Ct, and believe me when I say that while millions are out of work and have had their homes foreclosed on, the people you protect have not missed a beat in this crisis. Hopefully you will get your hand away from your baton, pepper spray and gun long enough to think clearly about what this is all about. Good luck!

[-] -1 points by natetongwong (-2) from East Orange, NJ 13 years ago

Haha, no I'm not a cop, but I sure as hell appreciate what they do at times like these. There is a reason people get hurt by the police, because they ask for it. Imagine I was in a large mob of people yelling angry things on a workday and the economy and you were a cop. All of a sudden, I start harassing you and your entire police institution, calling you thieves, crooks, and rapists. What would you do? Tolerate me forever? Yeah, I bet you'd punch me in the face. I'm a student and I constantly watch the police as they stand there forming a barricade while mobs of angry eff-the-police students throw every kind of vulgarity you can't find in the dictionary at them. No I do not approve of police brutality, but I do not approve of insurrections that disrupt the lifestyles of everyday Americans still trying to get by without wasting two months of their important lives utterly devoted to this movement. As for yourself, Veterans Day just passed. Police officers may not seem like it but they are veterans as well. Give them their due credit. I dare you to be a cop for one year.

You don't see me blasting the OWS folks as thieves, crooks, and rapists because of the isolated incidents where some protesters starts groping some woman.

[-] 0 points by Turtle (268) 13 years ago

Then why are they so -not- forthcoming when they see other officers engaged in various forms of corrupt behavior? Fixing tickets? Planting dope on those who don't own it? Excessive use of force? Trafficking? Perjury in warrant applications/afidavits, and in arrest reports? Assault and sexual assault?

Where is their honor in those times? So honorable that they dare not say anything out loud about that 'thin blue line'?

How honorable is -that-?!

Save it for the flag-wavers. I gave up on those fairy tales a long time ago.

Where I live, I don't call the cops anymore. Why would I chance inviting -anyone- into my home who (arguably) doesn't believe I should have the rights that I -do- have, let alone the ones I believe I should have?

An organized gang with varying numbers of decent cops among them, who still. all too often, dare not say anything out loud for fear of reprisal or (???) by their own ranks; that's what many departments and precincts in this country have become..

Yes, I met some of the decent NYPD cops when I was down there, while I was marching with the Occupiers, and writing stories, reporting on the Movement. Very seriously; they were very decent cops to interact with..

Were -they- likely to say anything about their 'blue brothers and sisters' who are and were corrupt? You can't hear the silence?

And, by the way, for a period of time, many years ago, my father was a cop... Don't think there's a void in -my- awareness. I witnessed the bruises on my mother. I watched him put them there, until he killed himself in '68. I watched -his- 'brothers in blue' and their insistance that what he did was "a private matter."

No person made any of the supposed martyrs you speak of apply for that job; it was a volunrtary choice they made willfully, and, according to generalized MMPI scores/profiles of cops, the persons in those positions are often attracted to positions of control and power for some pretty dubious reasons.

Not all, but many.

-Those- are facts, as opposed to wishful images generated out of some sense of false patriotism...

[-] 0 points by natetongwong (-2) from East Orange, NJ 13 years ago

So what forms of litigation do you propose, hmm? Disband the police and have a colonial minutemen-like system? Increase or decrease their salaries? Mandating that police officers get college degrees? Fine them? Make their jobs worse than it already is?

I've been to many places in the world with both successful police forces and not-so-successful police forces and I can tell you one thing that successful police forces have in common: they grew up in a society where wearing a badge did not cause disdain among the people they protect. You're damn good at pointing out flaws but you don't seem to have a clue what to do about it. We need less people like you cause we have enough of those already.

Now, what do you suggest we do?

[-] 4 points by jdjay (34) 13 years ago

The most alarming thing to me in the raid the other night was the media black-out that was ordered and the degree of force that was used to enforce that black-out. There were several reports of reporters being physically assaulted and having their NYPD authorized press passes confiscated. They have attempted to deprive the movement of what could be its defining moment. Those of you that were there and have the gift of being good writers need to give the world the eyes to see what happened the other night. We need to hear the details of how it went down from an insiders perspective. Their may have been a media blackout but you can still give the world the eyes to see through your words.

[-] 2 points by Turtle (268) 13 years ago

Yep, imagine those who swore to uphold the law, actively pissing all over the 1st, 4th, and 5th amendments. And getting paid by a corrupted system to do so. Apparently with little conscious realization of the violations of their own word of honor and integrity; the violation of the oaths they swore to.

Mercenary policing.. Busting heads for a pay-check.

In the old days, the unions and the mobsters called them 'enforcers,' within their respective groups.

The police should mind that this movement is a new governance system being born which shall not tolerate any evil person in police -the police should understand that this is the peoples movement with an idea which can catapult the humanity to unimaginable glory not only in, governance, economy, value system/ethics and culture but definitely in science, technology, medicine and above all in education where any normal person can be a specialist in several fields in fact the capitalism has arrested the real potential of the humanity. While we the humanity could have been self-sufficient in energy , and other materials even colonized several planets by now but the capitalists create hurdles for their personal benefits who are just interested in making humanity their slaves.

[-] 5 points by socialmedic (178) 13 years ago

Non-Violence requires tolerance. Non-violence means co-operation so long as co-operation is possible. The other side will do everything in its power to provoke violence. Robbing the equipment of the movement is one such provocation. The enemy is Wall Street. Know that agents of Wall Street have sent economic front men out to craft deals in third world countries who will no longer tolerate the interference by our corrupt right wing government. The movement is peacefully protesting against people who have assassinated honest men to install corrupt men into positions of power who would protect their financial interests. Wall Street is the epicenter of EVIL for the world.

[-] 4 points by Evilunderestimatespeople (11) 13 years ago

The people in Zuccotti Park are in fact the messengers of the humane philosophy who need to share their concepts with as many people as possible but in case they resort to violence then who shall expose the evil-in fact then the evil shall not allow them to share their ideas.

[-] 1 points by CancelCurrency (128) 13 years ago

Totally agree with you! Old system lasted long enough. Time for new and better one. The problem only that to many americans where brainwashed and dumbed by it immoral government, media and so called "think tank". They have all this pro capitalist and anti everything else in their genes. Hate to all foreign and thinking America is above all, makes movement forward almost impossible. But new millennium coming with it's new set of things. Whoever is not changing to adapt this new current, will be left behind and broken. If we would not stick to the idea that Earth is flat and to books which where giving such a"brilliant ideas" we would be able to fix our genetic code by now, improve it and may be live longer. But because of idiots who held scientific advance back, we by now still do not have that option. We could of save us from aging and death by now. But instead of it we still explaining to retards, that if they think they did not came from monkeys, they are the ones who are closer to them.

You should have a FACEBOOK link, so Facebookers can link these articles to FACEBOOK and share with others. Your version is different that what NYPD & Bloomberg.com & FOX news is reporting. Id rather post your versions of whats going on.

& of course NYPD isnt going to own up to being apart of that 99% the other week it was said that Wallstreet Broke them off a piece of the pie (so to speak) so of course many of NYPD (maybe all) are not on the peoples side. i mean c'mon RIOT GEAR? GUNS & Sticks NYPD? WOW. They need to train them better in the Academy. They come off as a bunch of scared, trigger happy, quick to BEAT, disrespectful individuals, rather than Protecting citizens, and respecting citizens (the people). Just be careful out there OWS! Welcome to New York those who come from other states. If they want the Park clean & tent free- for christ sakes just do it & keep this Protest sane, sober & peaceful. Power To The People!

I doubt every simple cop in NYPD is out to smash his fellow citizens over the head. The police is a hierarchy, the people at the top call the shots, just like everywhere.

[-] 1 points by TeaRex (36) from Hannover, NDS 13 years ago

What I mean is: Blame the high ranking police leadership, not the cop on the street, for the riot gear etc.

I think the point was that the call for riot gear came from above the Police Leadership, was rather purchased wholesale by thems whose gots big bonuses for bankrupting the entire planet and don't like the diminutive little ants down below telling them to WORK for a living.

The police act without dignity under orders of police chiefs without dignity, under orders of mayors without dignity, under orders of Wall Street without dignity. That is what started OWS, and that is why it cannot stop until dignity of the people of the US and real democracy is restored.

[-] 2 points by NickLento (11) 13 years ago

The cops have been treating the poor, minorities and women in general this way for years. They routinely abuse their powers in order to feed their egos and to bully inmates/arrestees into submission.

It's great that the OWS movement is resulting in shining some sunlight on this maleficent status quo!

The whole police culture needs to be transformed. Too many of them have a sick/criminal menatlity that feeds off of having power over others......it ultimately poisons their own lives. Humanizing the way cops do their jobs is not only good for the victims of their abuse...it would make them all more mentallly helathy and make their families more happy!!!

OWS can work on many levels!!! It's all connected!!! :-)

Tiananmen Square West. Want to win the argument? It's a matter of framing. The West (who created the problem) pompously assumes it has moral authority/superiority over all other nations. We masquerade with so-called "free trade", "free markets", and "free elections". Therefore, you need to begin publicly calling this what it is: "Tiananmen Square West". And remember the lyrics "Tin soldiers and Obama coming, We're finally on our own."

The only way you, OWS, all will make a difference is if you affect the day to day operation or flow of life, commerce, and or government. As i once witnessed in France, their government wanted to raise fines, tolls, taxes, etc. on all commercial truck drivers and trucking companies. What happened next was amazing. All French trucking companies and drivers criss crossed their trucks across all major highways in their country, completely blocking and disabling the transportation of all goods throughout the country. This lasted for about a week or less, until the government backed down and reversed its decision. It worked because it takes a protest of this scale to affect change. Occupying a park, although symbolic, will never ever ever do anything to change how disgustingly our government and the rich control all our lives, and continue to make the rich richer. You need to regroup, and i mean regroup all OWS protesters from across the country to a few very large simultaneous protests because small groups here and there won't really make a statement and can be easily intimidated and disbanded by authorities. You need a board of smart leaders that can effectively communicate a set of real smart ideas and demands and better organize the movement. You need to continue to use social media as a way to communicate as they did in the middle east to oust their dictators. But most of all you need to make one massive statement by protesting and affecting the day to day operation or flow of life, commerce, and or government. It will be the only way that you will get the govt and the rich to stop.......turn around......and stare in awe at the EPIC scale of the movement before them, and realize that the time has come, and that We The People have officially drawn the line in the sand, and are no longer willing to play their game any longer. IT IS THE ONLY WAY. Thank you.

Im down with the support of #OWS, Im down with the support of those who have been taken into custody, But I am totaly against the womens rights propaganda. The women in this country have more than enough rights already, A woman can lie and force a man from his home with no evidense, end his career with no evidense, take his children (almost garenteed in most states) with no reason or evidense, and, abuse and controle men with near impunity. There is little if any defense a man can mount in the legal system or the eyes of an employer to alligations of a woman. Iff you do not believe women re vengful enough to employthese tactics wake up, a conservative estimte on petitions for orders of protection (a powerful tool against men, which lays the ground work for many punitive legal actions) rate them at 35% fraudulent abuses of the legal system. Some studies claim as much as 90% fraud. I have personally watched several times as woman threatened to tell lies about a man if they didnt get what they wanted, saw those same men dragged int court with whitnesses, recordings, and vieo which all showed that the accusations where a lie, the woman had nothing but her word and won every one of those cases. Women have this ability because they have lobbiests supporting womens rights laws and threaten to pull womens votes by portraying any opposition as chauvinists. Most men i know have lost mre to, and are deaper in debt to women that they have or are to coorperations. I understand women are hurt as well by the abuses in our political and economic problems, I support any who wish to unite and fight the oppresssors, I just feel the group as a hole has expanded their rights in every area they have fought for and consistantly deamonized men, they have gone beyond equal and are on the verge if not totaly into the realm of oppressor for many in this country already. This is not a movement to further the cause of women but to further the cause of the 99% of which women are roughly half of.

You're surprised by male P.O.'s doing that. Do you not know a thing about the Prison and Justice system? They don't have to announce a patrol through nor will it always be a female officer just as males will be patrolled by males or females. The protocol's shown that the NYPD used arresting protester's in your video above are perfectly fine. Go back to the Vietnam era or go overseas, half of you would be coughing up tear gas, nursing rubber bullet or bean bag round wounds, and bumps on the head from a night stick. Suck it up, when you're told to leave an area a cop is following orders, that's their job to serve and protect the people. And you are NOT 99% of the people. If you don't listen it's you're own fault. All peaceful protests are subject to limitation. Don't act like you didn't push them back, it's obvious in the video, next time take some lessons from Onion news and twist your facts some more.

[-] 1 points by alouis (1511) from New York, NY 13 years ago

Cops routinely sexually degrade and sometimes even assault and rape women in their clutches. Someone needs to tell me again how they are "part of the 99%" and "union guys".

[-] 1 points by betsy (6) 13 years ago

It wasn't the police who raped women in the OWS in Philly. You are an inbreeding pile of scabies and hate the rest of the world. You are laughed at-especially by Obama since you are deflecting from his lack of leadership and mistakes and graft. Way to go OWS.

[-] 1 points by pepki (-13) 13 years ago

The people/women arrested were not breaking any laws. The NYPD was forced to break constitutional laws by censoring journalists access, trashing personal property and arresting people for excercising their first amendment rights. That is not the job police swore an oath to do. They are not the private mercenaries of a short statured billionaire. They are OUR employees!!!! And its time they respected that! And its time they and all people respect WOMEN!

Yeah, apart of asserting ones rights has everything to do with being arrested...the point is that the cops don't have to treat people this way. They do not have to be complicit in their own subjugation...and for what? The promise of more conflict?

[-] 1 points by SpreadEagle (15) 13 years ago

I say: Occupy NYPD. Voluntary arrests, overload NYPD with "arrestees". No violence, just get arrested and processed. Overload the system. If needed, force them to open "concentration camp" for "Occupiers". OCCUPY NYPD!

[-] 0 points by natetongwong (-2) from East Orange, NJ 13 years ago

What good will that do? Have you been watching so much Braveheart that you got obsessed with your overly-romanticized fantasies of getting arrested by authorities and then bragging about it to your friends and family? You'd probably ask them to hit you so you can show off your cool battle wounds to your friends.

[-] 1 points by SpreadEagle (15) 13 years ago

overload the system. If they don't want occupiers in the square, fill the jails. Numbers will make the point, that is the point.

[-] 1 points by natetongwong (-2) from East Orange, NJ 12 years ago

That's idiotic. Putting a lot of people in jail does not make remotely a good point. Prisons are reserved for drug dealers, murderers, rapists, and other offenders, not people trying to make a point. Don't take the nation's correctional institution so lightly.

I would prefer one decent, educated protester who took the time and effort to formulate a well thought-out proposal to Congress than a million confused angry fellows with posters ending up in jail.

If you prefer the former, write out a series of good economic and political reforms and I will politely comment on them and bring up points that will be addressed by your opposition. If you prefer the latter, you obviously are into this movement just for the revolutionary-romantic vibe you've been watching on TV and in movies.

There are reports that there are currently two police officers in the middle of almost every street in NYC. They are trying to show a presence of intimidation as a message to all that want to join in the protests tomorrow. Do not get intimidated by the police presence. There will be many more protesters than police so they will be the ones in fear of us not us in fear of them. Most of the police out there look like rookies so they are not going to obey the penal codes since they have an excuse of being a rookie and they will not get suspended Keep your video cameras out and film as much as possible tomorrow. Follow the white shirt officers around since they are senior and make the decisions. If you are not out protesting still video everything you can. We need to show the world what goes on as this police state develops here in NYC. There will be times when the rookie cops will tell the court room jury next week that he or she was not there at that time so the video evidence will show he/she is lying Almost every police car is also out today some streets are completely lined with police cars The elite know they are in trouble and we will not be stopped from exposing them to the world and making things miserable for them as they have for us. Do not allow Bloomberg to have his quiet time anymore. We need to keep him on alert at all times. We need to follow him wherever he is and be loud at all times. The same for wall street executives that reside on Park Avenue we need to expose them and follow them and make noise wherever they are. Why should they be allowed to steal our monies, our pension funds and still be able to eat at the expensive steak houses while we suffer on ramen noodles. Do exactly as the police tell you to do tomorrow and keep it peaceful but loud. When the streets get too crowded and the police tell people to get onto the sidewalks film everything that shows how we obeyed them but they did not allow us to get onto the crowded sidewalks. Get the videos to show who they are. Tony Bologna was caught on film and he has now been demoted after pepper spraying the innocent women. Tomorrow we should have many more of those rogue cops exposed. Tomorrow;s demonstrations will cost the city millions and we will not stop there. The millions need to be paid to the city from those wall street executives that stole from us. The only way for the millions to not be spent is for them to give us what we demand otherwise we will bankrupt this city of NY with our demonstrations and marches. See you tomorrow we are coming in from North Carolina many of us to support you.

Mutual respect - that's all 'The People' are asking for here and I think cops understand that. Tactics of intimidation and humiliation doesn't make one a better person, it just makes them a bully and that's not in the job description of a police officer, to serve and protect 'The People' [who pay them to protect The People]. So yeah, “If you see something, say something!” is a DHS campaign... and it applies to cops too. Right, how about let us go back to torturing people in jail? Oh wait, they do that from time to time still! Jail should not be a humiliating experience, as it is today and the prison culture is notoriously dysfunctional. No one deserves to be treated with disrespect. Jail was created to punish those who broke the moral and ethical codes of their community and it has evolved into an industry, a publicly funded industry, that allows for terrible abuse. It is another perversion of our for profit model that operates without conscience. I have a hunch that if you were in jail, you'd want to be treated decently as well. What is the point of policing if integrity and principle cannot be maintained? We cannot resign ourselves to a justice system that is abusive and unequal. are they treating Jamie Dimon, head of JPMorgan and Chase with disrespect? Nope, he gave himself a 19 million dollar bonus in the midst of this financial crisis. The cops should stop hurting people who are asserting their human and Democratic rights...what is in it for them?

toilets are not in plain view to humiliate, it's because 1% of the criminals locked up use their bodies to hide things so any sence of privacy is taken away to eliminate or lessen those "opportunities" to smuggle stuff. That being said, male officers walking by every 5 minutes to check might be for intimidation or humiliation... there should be female officers for that or something.

We are Stronger and are heard around the world!! Energized, it is internal now, not just sleeping outside. Our message is clear but my main concern are the elements; sleeping outside, this is hazardous and unsafe. We must find away to still be visibly seen but not camp out over night. Perhaps post for afternoon to late evenings rallies, getting people who support OWS (down with greed financial gain and economic oppression!!), by obtaining the emails of people who offer shelter for the supporters who can't get home after the rallies. These are suggestions...OWS WE BELIEVE!!!

[-] 0 points by Ubuntu (34) from Brooklyn, NY 13 years ago

People could show up when they can regularly, in shifts. Then everyone can be called in for marches and demonstrations. That way it could still be a 24 hour occupation without camping. Though I have to say IMHO the message that is sent by people leaving their homes to live in the park is such a risky but potent gesture. It portrays convincingly that the average citizen will or inevitably will, when they feel they have reached their personal limits of tolerance, risk their own convenience and solitude for the cause.

[-] -1 points by myrealthoughtshidden (0) 13 years ago

Your message is anything but clear. A news report recently quoted a OWS Denver person when asked when will this be over, and the reply, when the capitalist government is replaced with a socialist one. Let's see what do the following countries have in common: Algeria, Bolivia, Burkina, Burma, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Iraq, Libya, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Senegal, Sudan, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia? There all failed socialist countries, history has proven time and again that socialism doesn't work. When I make my money of the sweat of my own labor the last thing I want to do is share it with those looking for handouts that the OWS appears to be all about.

[-] 1 points by Ubuntu (34) from Brooklyn, NY 13 years ago

Well yeah none of them were actually socialism. Just like we were never a democracy we are just a barely disquised feudal landscape powered by plutocracy. Our "decision makers" see it as a capitalist republic but they can't even see the truth. You also forget that there are people from everywhere here in the states. So some of us actually have lived in at least one of those countries as I have and I can tell you for a fact that it was never what socialism is supposed to be.

I personally am sick of this cold war era vernacular that demonizes socialism as if it has actually existed. We get all worked up here in the states over democracy versus socialism but neither have truly existed other than as a written definition. So to say one is better than the other is total b.s. To think about what effects the world so dualisticly is naive. Certain aspects of society can and need to be socialized because keeping them with the realm of profit motives does not work.

If one day the occupy movement reaches critical mass and we can feed ourselves from donations and even urban and/or local farming. It will show that the world does have enough resources to sustain us. I believe this is possible and it is merely poor management that leaves so many unsheltered, hungry and generally not cared for. This poor management is caused by profit motives being applied at the inappropriate time and place. Capitalist greed needs to be regulated. Certain neccessities should be the basis of our decisions and not profit. For instance, if everyone in the 5 boroughs had a roof garden and/or yard garden. Our city would not just be a city but a huge farm able to sustain all of it's citizens and more. That extra could be exported for profit but basic free nutritious local food could be provided for free equally for everyone. If they want something imported, something more "exotic" then they could pay and be taxed for that luxury. Now what if those taxes where used to fund a basic universal healthcare service, just an example (I realise it would actually be a bit more complicated, but I do believe it could work).

How about housing? Here in NYC there are enough vacant buildings owned by developers to provide housing for all those who are currently on the streets and some more. So why do we keep building to earn profit when there are people who need shelter. We could take a mere fragment of those vacant buildings to provide modest but free shelters with electricity and clean facilities. Meanwhile we sit here crammed in expensive apartments in close quarters just to wait for developers to slowly change our landscape in fancy blue glass apartment buildings that nobody can afford to live in.

[-] -2 points by justaguy (91) 13 years ago

"Our message is clear"

Since all messages are equal in a system that has each person as the leader (at least that is what is posted on this website), then the message is everything from getting money out of politics to having a $52,000 minimum wage, to burning down NYC to totally collapsing the banking system, stock market system and the American government.

Oh and lets not forget that all debts should be forgiven and that people should stop paying debts they have.

And everyone should break into vacant homes and occupy them since it is the banks that forced the buyers not to pay for them.

That is the thing about everyone being the same and equal leader. There are many many people in the nation that can have a good life, but will never ever be a leader of anything. Yet with OWS their message is just as valid and the next person.

Not the way to the heart of the real 99%.

Did you actually ever try to read the health care bill that was passed?

It was a thousand pages of new laws, new committees, new regulations, new giveaways, special treatments for minorities, bigger and bigger and bigger government.

See the thing is that thousand page law will spurn about 20,000 pages of new rules, laws and regulations that will force the entire American population to be at the mercy of the people writing the new and improved regulations.

When Nancy Pelosi said you had to pass the bill to find out what was in it, she was not kidding. That was what she was referring to.

And, as far as death panels go, you have to understand that most health care dollars spent in a persons life are incurred in the last year, and really the last month, week and days of life.

If we really are going to control health care costs, then that has to stop.

Should an 80 year old with a heart problem be given a bypass that could extend his life for a few months....how about a few days..or even a few years? Do we continue to pay for all treatments for all people regardless of the cost / benefit?

As someone who is dying, these are things that have crossed my mind on more than one occasion.

You tell me when it is ok for me to demand any treatment, regardless of cost because it might give me a few more weeks.

[-] 0 points by BreadLandPeace (359) 13 years ago

It's very moving to read about your situation and thoughts. I think you have every right to demand the absolutely best care possible for yourself, and that's partly what our fight is for. “We, the people, are in the majority; we are 99%, controlled in a sick manner by 1%. We are the strength and true power (divine) on this earth.” From Liberation of the People: The Pathology of Power, page 24, Norberto R. Keppe, New York, 1986 http://www.libertacaodospovos.org/

We want to summon all of you who have a practical nature, all who possess idealism and dynamism, all who believe in goodness, truth and beauty, to unite so that a new world can be built, a new society: the true Kingdom of Man on earth. In this new society we will work for ourselves and enjoy what the Creator has bequeathed to us, those things that until now we have been deprived of by the individuals who hold economic-financial power in their hands. We have arrived at a decisive moment in time when it is no longer possible to go on sustaining those ill-intentioned individuals who have taken control of the planet and organized a social order just for themselves — allowing us a few crumbs only when their position is in danger of collapse or when they are forced to give us something. We are calling on all of you to bring about the greatest of all “revolutions” that mankind has ever experienced. We are calling you together to turn society around, to disinvert it and head it in the right direction. We are no longer willing to be cannon fodder for the powerful, or the pilots of their war planes and the drivers of their combat tanks which spread death and destruction. We want to live life; we want to produce for ourselves and our fellow men; we want to live in peace with everyone. Nor can we let them go on exploiting us and killing us, pitting one class against another, one people against another, one profession against another. We intend to put a stop to all of this because we want to live in a time of peace now — that peace we have always desired but which has been denied us. http://www.libertacaodospovos.org/

I think it need be noted that there is distinct difference between law and justice. The law in fact makes an arrest. But justice demands that that those forced to act in such an aggressive and personally abhorrent manner receive, and therefore extract, some form of retribution. To defer to gender is to empower; it is immoral, unethical, and antithetical to the cause of justice. .

[-] -2 points by MeMyselfandI (85) 13 years ago

Amazing how you idiots continue to break laws and then when arrested manage to make up all kinds of baseless accusations against the police. Either prove it or STFU

[-] 0 points by Turtle (268) 13 years ago

I believe one of the courts' prosecution teams in NYC is currently 'proving' corruption charges of one sort or another against over 20 of your officers as I type this; some already proven.

And I watched those other officers who defended the actions of the accused in the news, in some cases battering the press, while attempting to shield those officers who were indicted.

That was about two weeks ago, by the way.

Is that 'proof' enough?

Yeah, I bet they got all the 'bad ones,' right?

[-] -1 points by MeMyselfandI (85) 13 years ago

Your comments have nothing to do with the claims being made about the imaginary harassment of women. I guess that means you believe in guilt by association? Since someone did something wrong everyone is guilty? Is that it? If so, lets talk about rapes, drug use, violence etc at the OWS infestations. I mean, if you want to apply the guilt by association standard you want to apply it to everyone right?

[-] 0 points by Turtle (268) 13 years ago

Nope, not what I said at all.

But I watched the union's police goons apply limited force toward news crews at the court that day. How many of them that pushed camera crews were busted for assault by their superiors? By their fellow officers? Misdemeanor assault charges abound that day, and no one saw them in the blotter?

And while the numbers at OWS involved in crimes against others are recorded, and a matter of fact, I also note the relative per capita rates of offense, and can direct you to some number-crunching that might surprise you.

See my comment above the one you responded to, by the way, as I acknowledged marching along-side some of your apparently-very good officers; both commendable blue shirts, and white shirts as well.

But you know what? The OWSers I met, as far as I know, never took an oath to uphold the law, defend the constitution, and preserve peace, while keeping the members of the public safe.

Every one of those officers at the court that day, those who were indicted, those who were defending them from the press, and those who protected them on the job, did swear that oath; many of them falsely so.

Cleanse your own ranks before you cleanse Zuccotti Park, or any other group of would-be change agents addressing the trillion-dollar crimes that this country's 'first line of defense' let run rampant for so long..

And if you're a decent cop, then my hat's off to you. Now get to actively cleaning up your precinct and department so we don't have any of these conversations in the future.

I suspect I'd like my world as clean as you'd like yours.

Excuse me, the word "rape" does not even appear in the above...

you are putting words into their mouths that are not there, when you put the word rape there.

peacefully and respectfully asking them to stop deliberate humiliation tactics is not crap...it's those tactics that are crap....these people are protecting your and my freedom by speaking out against such tactics...if you let them grow, then such tactics will only scare away more and more people from speaking out...not only scare away OWS people but ANY AMERICANS who protest ANY cause...because we will be one more step towards "they can do anything to you" and get away with more...

Heck if it were protesters I completely disagreed with (let's say, protesters who are against contraception) I'd STILL be on their side if they wanted to respectfully assemble and ask police to stop humiliation tactics against their friends in jail...

if I'd support such a peaceful speak out by those I completely disagree with politically, every American should support it in the case of OWS no matter their political views

[-] 3 points by socialmedic (178) 13 years ago

Take a good look at contemporary Brazilian History and the reasons why nearly all of South America has cast out the RIGHT in favor of the LEFT. The majority of Americans put the FASCISTS into power for the last 35 years. If you think they are going to leave simply for the asking, you are dreaming. Worse, many of them still do not understand that they are fighting fascism. FASCISM IS what WALL STREET represents.

[-] -1 points by TeaRex (36) from Hannover, NDS 13 years ago

Sorry, but bandying about "killer" terms like "fascist" or (from the other side) "communist" doesn't help anybody understand what's going on. Why not debate the issues instead of sorting people into little drawers with convenient labels?

[-] 1 points by socialmedic (178) 12 years ago

Why not read Karl Marx and the Fascist manifesto and understand what factions are fighting instead of denying neither one existed. In the end we will end up with the same ideas and these people thought of them before we did. And we can go on and on thinking we are the new and original ones without ever resolving historical conflicts that will always confront us. And tomorrow our kids will call us irrelevant too because we just couldn't take the time to explain the truth to them.

The problem is not about wealth. The problem is about greed. In other words, there is nothing wrong with someone having a genuinely great idea that helps the world progress and they become rich in the process, but when people make profit off of war, death, mental illness, physical illness, population control, the devaluation of the dollar and other currencies around the world there is a problem. When the world suffers for the unneccessary wealth of a very few people the world needs address that obvious problem. Notice I say uneccessary wealth, as in, the people who are a problem have excess millions of dollars that make no difference as to the quality of their personal life. They could keep their mansions, yachts and what nots even after dropping a few million.

[-] 0 points by tsdevi (307) 13 years ago

Yes, watch The Top One Percent where people who want access to a financial planning convention must have about 100 million dollars in assets...this money is being made out of nothing. Interest, debt, speculation...the stock market itself is such a dubious tool for making money, because people do not invest in the long term, but the short term and for the purpose of short term gains...these are a myth in the real, workaday world.

Indeed we are living in a dream world in some ways still, compared to what Republicans have in mind. If we, as a country, make the decision to deliberately exclude the poor from medical treatment, how long do you think you're going to be able to ride an ambulance straight into the hospital for emergency surgery? They're going to have to stop it and search it in a security checkpoint first to make sure there isn't a bomb in it. People will look back to our impossibly naive time the way that they look back to how people could just waltz onto an airliner in the 50s without going through an hour-long security checkpoint. They'll just scratch their heads and wonder, or more likely, just ignore what they can't understand.

[-] -3 points by Cstat (1) 13 years ago

While I respect that NYPD officers may be "making unannounced patrols by the women's cells, and by the shared women's toilet" (I say may be as the only report I have heard of this comes from the above article which does not even cite specific people) and agree that if they are doing so that is a detestable thing which would be degrading to those women, to say that this is "violent behavior" is false. Violence is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something." or "Law: the unlawful exercise of physical force or intimidation by the exhibition of such force." While I appreciate that the use of such tactics as listed in the above article would be humiliating, they are not violent. I am disappointed to see the choice of such inflammatory language for what appears to be only to create a rise in people.

you know how OWS likes to say "this is what democracy looks like"? well, get this:

"This is what JAIL looks like!"

Not pretty, right? well, it's not meant to be. And these people CHOSE to get arrested knowing the conditions there. Gotta be accountable for their own choice and actions.

[-] 4 points by econdemocracy (41) 13 years ago

"This is what JAIL looks like!"

Your type said that when Martin Luther King was arrested too, right?

I mean, he CHOSE to get arrested so ANYTHING they do to him, or less famous black and white protesters, was A-ok, by this "logic"

"This is what JAIL looks like!"

I guess if they Tortured everyone in jail (or racially segregated everyone, etc) you could still say "This is what JAIL looks like!"

In other words you miss the whole POINT. It's not a very good answer, to say "this is what jail looks like" the point is, is this what jail SHOULD look like?

Pointing out that the way jail currently "looks like" is messed up, is not countering their point, not by one iota...it merely underscores how much more in this society needs to change.

Of course you sound like the kind of nice person whose heart is filled with compassion for their fellow human being, the kind who even at far more brutal treatment of prisoners, just makes excuses and says "tough sh*t" the kind of attitude the police state loves..."anything goes" once someone is convicted right? any now even more morally disgusting, "anything goes" once someone is arrested right? Lots of regimes like Saudi Arabia would love people to have that attitude.

The 99"% is not buying that amoral, immoral, pro police state, "see no evil" excuse making pro-Gulag attitude...you can troll a few people, you can even post "ha ha, I'm glad" if you get a kick out of it...but we're not going along with it..., and we're building a better America and better world

"Rats and roaches live by competition under the laws of supply and demand. It is the privilege of human beings to live under the laws of justice and mercy." -Wendell Berry

"We want structures serving people, not people serving structures" -1968 Paris Commune graffiti

[-] -1 points by cfnyc (3) 13 years ago

Ehm... I'm sure Martin Luther King didnt get a notice ahead of time saying, leave the private property or face arrest?!

[-] 2 points by econdemocracy (41) 13 years ago

And had he gotten such a notice while he was sleeping in a tent...it's be ok?

And had he even gotten such a notice while awake, then it's be ok, no matter what they did to him?

You're not addressing the point, which is, does "anything go?" If you think "anything goes" then God bless you, that's just pure pro-totalitarianism.

If you don't believe that "anything goes" once someone is arrested, then, don't way "but..but...but they CHOSE to be arrested" since that says basically the same: "anything goes"

If you're not for "Anything goes" then state directly you are for or against this or that specific tactics, not this wishy washy statement that "well they CHOSE to be arrested" which means, in practice, an "anything goes" attitude since it refuses to say "I am ok with tactic X" or "I am not for it" then (I'll leave it to those with more energy) the tactic X can be debated in its specifics.

Same thing if those in prison were for causes I totally disagree with...I can disagree with their causes..and I can agree or disagree with the tactics of the police..but if I said " but they CHOSE to be arrested" I would be coping out...it's a cop out to not address whether one is for or against the tactic(s) being protested in the first place...If I can understand that about protesters even those I disagree with on issues, any American should be able equally so, to understand that principle for OWS protesters, no matter their political views. Good night.

[-] 3 points by zygarch (83) 13 years ago

To choose to exercise free speech, is not necessarily choosing to be arrested. All OWS protesters understand that they RISK getting arrested, but that is a different thing from CHOOSING it.

You seem like a truly compassionate human being. It would be great if you lived up to our expectations. Thank you!

[-] -2 points by cfnyc (3) 13 years ago

They were given written notifications well ahead of time. That's already a special treatment for people knowingly breaking the law.

Freedom of speech does not shield someone from breaking the law, such as erecting structures in public space, and resisting police enforcing such law

[-] 1 points by zygarch (83) 13 years ago

"They were given written notifications well ahead of time."

Try 20 minutes.

[-] -1 points by cfnyc (3) 13 years ago

Well, according to all the major news, notices were handed out 1am and police moved in after 3am. But since I was not there, I'm not going to contest your version of the story. 20 minutes it is.

Still, that's enough time to just walk away.

[-] 2 points by zygarch (83) 13 years ago

Sorry but the police arrived at 1:04 a.m. They told those around the perimeter to get their stuff and get out. Then they entered Zuccotti and told everyone else simply to "get out of the park or risk being arrested". More than half the folks then moved out of the park, many being told they could "get their stuff later." That "later" never came. Everyone except the first few people who took only what they could carry (and THAT was also a directive: "you can take one bag"), lost all of their personal belongings as they were NEVER allowed back into the park to retrieve anything. By 1:32 the eviction was "in progress." So yeah, sorry, it wasn't 20 minutes. It was 28 minutes. Any other media details about the time are either guesses, estimates, or made up.
