Hey, I was wondering if there's any talk about doing any sort of 1 year commemoration encampment, etc.
One thing I learned from studying the history of gay movements is that the only reason Stonewall is remembered as a significant event is because a year later a few people (partially spearheaded by the Oscar Wilde Bookstore owner) decided to shift the date for and move an annual Philadelphia march to NYC to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. Despite all the problematic reasons for locating Stonewall as a gay rights origin, I think that holding some sort of annual recognition DOES help keep a movement alive and active in the national consciousness.
Memorials are a good way of refreshing memories and to help people rededicate to a cause.
Anyone?
