"God said to Abraham, kill me a son. "Abe said, God, you must be puttin' me on. "God said, hey! Abe said, what? "God said, you can do what you want Abe but... "Abe said, where you want this killin' done..."
This, like most of Genesis, works as a metaphore. Here it's about the surcease of human sacrifice by a tribe of pastoral nomads in the Middle East.
The only way I can take the story literally is to conclude that Abraham was a violent psychopath who suffered schizoid hallucinations. And he's known as the father of Judaism and Christianity. Like the rest of civilization, humanity got off to a bad start. It seems to have gotten worse.
Our civilization is the story of ruling elite classes that measure the progress of our human community by their increases in wealth.
We work for them and are paid too little to live debt free. They pocket the rest of the profit and the interest on the loans.
That last was forbidden by Moses and other Mesopotamian priests and kings. They also declared regular clean slate "Jubilees" to keep the whole thing from either blowing up or imploding.
