Abney associates MONTREAL travellers should be wary of cyber threats on the holiday that they can access free wireless networking with smartphones, tablets or laptops, "said software security company Symantec Corp. Canadians travel for March break and the summer season shouldn't be doing things like pulling up their bank accounts on the Wi-Fi network, said Symantec Canada's Lynn Hargrove.

"What people don't realize is that there is no security on this WiFi network for the most part," she said.

"It's a great way to stay in touch while you're on vacation, but there are some inherent risks that come with it that people are not just thinking about."

Symantec has found the two in 10 Canadians pull up their bank accounts on the free Wi-Fi network in Canada. Young men are most at risk for cybercrime because they are "fearless" and gain access to risky web sites, said Hargrove, Director of consumer solutions, from Toronto.

According to Symantec's Norton Cybercrime report 2012, travelers often exposed through their mobile devices while abroad, often for text messages. "We see a lot of fake lyrics that ask you to click a link or go and dial a number to retrieve a voice mail message," Hargrove said. And the wealth of information that is stored on a smartphone – images, texts, emails, contacts, work documents, bankinformasjon-can be valuable to cyber criminals if stolen or lost, "said Hargrove. "What people don't realize is that in many cases they have more information on the device than they have at home."

Smartphone users should at least have a password to get access to their device, said Hargrove, and there are also security software available for smartphones. 2012 Norton Cybercrime report found that 92 percent of respondents in Russia said they had been victims of computer crime.

For Canadians travelling to Mexico or Brazil, each country has a rate of 75 per cent of citizens online to be former victims cybercrime, said Hargrove. In less developed countries with a lot of free Wi-Fi network added it also tends to be a lot of cybercrime, she. Cybercrime in France's 55 percent and 70 percent in Canada, according to the report, which examined 13,018 online adults last July in 24 countries, including Canada, Australia, Brazil, China, Mexico, Singapore, Turkey, Poland United Kingdom and United States.
