TODAY. NOON. LIBERTY SQUARE. #LetFreedomSpring! Ray Kelly Must Go!

Posted 12 years ago on March 24, 2012, 4:36 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

union square occupied

At noon, we will march to call for NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly’s immediate resignation and to show that we are fearless in the face of state violence. Last Saturday, the police department broke up a peaceful Spring celebration in Liberty Square by kicking, punching and beating Occupy Wall Street activists. Since then, NYPD has conducted nightly raids on Occupiers in Union Square to enforce arbitrary rules as an excuse to harass, intimidate, brutalize, and arrest those gathered peacefully there to build community and challenge the financial elite. The NYPD enacts this brutality against communities of color, Muslim Americans, women, the LGBTQI community and other activists across this city on a daily basis to uphold a system of such vast economic inequality. Violence is required to maintain order for the 1%.

On Saturday, we will march together from Liberty Square (Zuccotti Park) to Union Square to say enough!

We will no longer tolerate violence in our neighborhoods and against our children.

We will no longer tolerate Stop and Frisk.

We will no longer tolerate constant surveillance.

We will no longer tolerate the violence suppression of free speech and right to assembly.

We know that this violence is the strong arm of economic and social injustice.

In the face of this brutal system, we are fearless, fierce and feminist. Together we declare, let freedom spring!

Read the Rules

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

What part of that does Ray Kelly not understand?

should that be "and" not "or" ?

[-] 2 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

No, because then the limitation only applies to all of them together. For example: "congress shall make no law prohibiting drinking and the throwing of darts" would only apply to drinking AND throwing darts (like drinking and driving). That's my guess. You're looking at the original language.

What part of this do you not understand? Meaning all bets have been off for many years.

Those remarks refer to the Nuremburg principles and are related to foreign policy decisions. Claiming that "all bets are off" is a somewhat hysterical response to Noam Chomsky's remarks don't you think?

Wow, sail right past the relevant meat of the matter just like most all of you folks insist on doing. Please continue with your blissful ignorance.

I couldn't give two shits about anything Noam has to say, I only find his opinions of YOUR Obama, to be spot on and rather amusing. I just tossed that at you for good measure.

However, it wouldn't matter if the other guy had won the Whitehouse, the same shit would still be happening. Read the first link and maybe you'll figure out why.

I couldn't give two shits about the fringe conspiracy theory you linked me to. Socialism! Oh, I'm so scared! I guess if you stare at enough McNuggets you're bound to find George Washington's face in one of them. Have fun with your McNuggets.

A great message.

I hope the 1% owned press has reporters who can't help but push publicity on this one.

The irony beautiful and the message powerful.

Maybe they can photoshop in a few more people because for claiming to represent virtually everyone, that's a puny turn-out.

That's a pretty good turn-out for these days in the US. Americans are far more likely to support a cause online or otherwise indirectly than in person. We are not only very individualistic, but also a huge majority of us are influenced by the mass media that slanders the movement. We also do not share a common acknowledged identity, whether national or otherwise, so that number in the photo looks pretty good to me.

Excellent logo. You should make and sell patches and iron-ons. Couple them with short literature handouts - nice outreach and education possibility.

Now just pull together a few more people to attend the rallies. Where is everbody?

Beautifully put. "Let Freedom Spring".

I have to say, the mindset that has been prevalent the past couple of days is refreshing. Finally, we are grabbing the bull by the horns and saying "No more" rather than "that hurts".

Solidarity!

This is what is happening in Greece today. The police is targeted as villeins, as they should for protecting the criminal elite.

Pretty sure that LGBTQI stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender---not sure actually. Some may even be less sure than I am. A lot know, I realize, but will you please spell it out the first time you use it in a post?

[-] 1 points by proudofOKC (361) 12 years ago

Good idea. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning, and Intersex. The Trans stands for variations such as transgender, transsexual, and transvestite. The Intersex is the current politically correct term for a spectrum of medical conditions previously incorrectly labeled as hermaphrodite.

I love this symbol by the way it's perfect !!! - What about just everyone part of this wears a t-shirt and spread out all throughout popular NY place - not Occupying a single space or park but the entire public space of NY. The goal is to be seen - demonstrate the plight by wearing the t-shirts and sitting on a sidewalk not in groups but spread out across the city - can they arrest people for simply being "homeless" or sitting on a bench wearing a t-shirt with a symbol on it? This could also make the cause very interesting - could they arrest someone wearing a t-shirt who is standing or sitting in a public space and if they do have they violated civil rights-? Example: are you part of the protest or are you just a guy or small group of guys wearing a t-shirt and how can the police fight that ? If they start to arrest everyone who is just walking around or sitting around or wearing a t-shirt - how do they know who to arrest or if they could later be sued for that arrest - it will also make incredibly HUGE headlines if they start doing that. And will further justify the cause. Blur the lines and let the police cross them - !!! We can set the nets instead of the other way around.

No offense taken because I am so grateful to this movement and your efforts By headlining with the police you are letting the police own your movement - I think Occupy must stop focusing on police as your cause it's diverting your entire movement from it's goals ??!!!!!!!- I have a suggestion.!f they won't let you protest somewhere go somewhere else and if they won't let you go there so somewhere else - pop up everywhere ... Let them come to you not the other way around ! Right now it's like walking into the net ! Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. This movement can be taken anywhere that's the beauty - it's mobile!! OCCUPY EVERYWHERE!!
